Flame-Wall Interactions In A Spark-Ignition Engine

The optimisation of engines in terms of emissions, efficiency and performance requires an in-depth understanding of combustion and its underlying physical processes. Concerning combustion in spark-ignition engines, the interaction of the flame with the combustion chamber walls is currently not fully understood and experimental data such as quenching distances are lacking. Therefore, a research project was initiated with the aim to provide information about this complex phenomenon and to give a basis for the advancement of combustion models and engines in this respect. The investigations were carried out at BMW as part of a cooperation with the Institute of Internal Combustion Engines and Thermodynamics at the Graz University of Technology.
