The 11th edition of the Mahindra BAJA SAEINDIA 2018-IIT Ropar concluded successfully with the Government College of Technology (GCT), Coimbatore emerging the overall winners of the second leg of the competition. The winners were awarded with a cash price of Rs 1.50 lakh, with Government College of Engineering, Aurangabad bagging the second position and receiving a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh.
The event was themed ‘Ground to Glory,’ with the overall mandate for the participants being to design, analyse, fabricate and validate an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) that was evaluated on various parameters. The vehicle parameters evaluated included durability, design, cost evaluation, sales presentation, acceleration, manoeuvrability, hill climb and endurance.
Mahindra BAJA SAEINDIA 2018-IIT Ropar received a good response with the registration of 388 teams. Out of all these teams, 25 teams passed through rigorous rounds to make it to the final endurance event that was held on a 2.98 km long race track at IIT Ropar. The track consisted of muddy pits, cliffs and slopes of 15-20 ft in height, making it challenging for the participants.
Dr Pawan Goenka, Managing Director, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd, said many countries across the globe are moving beyond traditional classrooms so as to encourage out-of-the-box ideas. The focus in India is still on traditional classrooms in India, he added. However, Dr Goenka noted that BAJA SAEINDIA 2018-IIT Ropar acts as an intermediary to make people realise that innovation does not need to be shackled by four walls of the classroom.
Students need to strive for excellence, noted Prof S K Das, Director, IIT Ropar. He said such initiatives not only make students industry-ready, but also infuse an entrepreneurial spirit in them.
