DENSO Picks Up Stake in Metawave to Deliver Smart Radar for Autonomous Cars

DENSO Corporation has picked up a stake in US-based startup Metawave Corporation that develops cutting edge, millimeter-wave radar sensing technologies to detect vehicles and pedestrians. DENSO through this latest investment will leverage Metawave’s technologies to accelerate the development of a smart automotive radar system for autonomous cars. Metawave has the core technologies for expanding the radar detection range as well as improving recognition performance and reducing size, the company noted.

A millimeter-wave radar sensor detects surrounding conditions using radio waves in the millimeter-wave band. These sensors are used in the radar systems to apply the brakes when a collision is unavoidable, and maintain a certain distance from a preceding vehicle while driving, the company stated.

All these initiatives are part of DENSO’s efforts to develop sensors that act as vehicle’s “eyes”, thus paving the way for a safe future of mobility.
