DENSO Corporation has released a retrofittable driver status monitor that will help significantly reduce road accidents. The company said that the safety product checks for distractions, drowsiness, sleep and inappropriate posture based on the driver’s facial image is captured through a camera installed in the cabin. The monitor voices an alert if it detects any drowsy or distracted driving.

DENSO said that the driver status monitor is retrofittable to existing vehicles on the road can accelerate the roll-out of safety devices for commercial vehicles. A driver’s condition is detected by the product and recorded on a SD card. The operation manager and the driver can review the driving status, including the number of voiced alerts and driver’s image when an alert has been triggered. The driver’s condition can be notified to the operation manager in real-time, thus making it possible to caution the driver and initiate prompt action during emergency situations, the company noted.

DENSO added that large commercial vehicles often cause serious damage in an accident and most of these vehicles have not installed the latest safety devices.
