Magna International Inc announced today it has supplied key systems to the NIO ES8 electric SUV, in line with environmental plans taking shape in China, and start-ups developing and launching new-energy vehicles. NIO is a Chinese start-up founded in 2014, which designs and develops smart, high-performance electric vehicles. Magna is supplying the ES8 with aluminium body, chassis, and the gearboxes for the electric drive system, showcasing its combined expertise in powertrains, body and structure, and lightweight materials.

The NIO ES8 is a seven-seater electric SUV, featuring a lightweight all-aluminium body and chassis, and comes standard with electric-drive (e-drive) systems in the front and rear. Content from Magna in the vehicle include the aluminium front sub-frame and rear cradle, gearboxes for both e-drive systems and latching system for side doors and hood.

Magna said that it possesses unique capabilities and experience to support the growth of new-energy vehicles in China and globally. It added that it is a technology leader across several automotive product areas. Magna also claimed it is able to combine expertise in hybrid and electric powertrains, a vehicle’s overall body and structure, and lightweighting solutions using a range of both metallic and plastic/composite materials.

Swamy Kotagiri, Chief Technology Officer, Magna, said supporting a new automaker in launch of a vehicle such as the NIO ES8 electric SUV is ideally suited for the company. Magna is able to apply its full-vehicle expertise to help make the vehicle lightweight, while at the same time helping deliver power to the wheels in the most efficient way, he added. Kotagiri noted that working with customers to help them bring their ideas to life is really what Magna is all about.
