Optare PLC, a subsidiary of Hinduja group company Ashok Leyland, has won an order to deliver 31 Optare Metrodecker EV double-decker buses from Transport for London (TfL). Bought by Metroline, it is the largest pure electric double-decker bus fleet order in Europe and will be added to London’s fleet by next summer, stated the company.
The 18 tonne GVW Metrodecker EV developed by Optare gets a unique integral space frame design that weighs only a few hundred kgs more than its diesel equivalent. It can operate over a range of 150 miles in a single charge and has the capacity to carry 90 passengers. Metroline’s iconic routes 43 (Friern Barnet – London Bridge) and 134 (North Finchley – Tottenham Court Road) will be soon exclusively operated by electric double-deckers, the company noted.
Vinod K. Dasari, Managing Director, Ashok Leyland, said that his company has been investing intelligently in developing e-mobility solutions for various markets and the order proves Optare’s technological prowess.“Investment in Optare was a strategic move which will give us long-term benefits in terms of developing the technology. E-mobility business for us is growing fast and Optare will play a crucial role in strengthening our leadership position globally,” he added.
