Karma and Sennheiser to showcase first in-car AMBEO sound system at Monterey Car Week from August 15-18, 2019, on a new 2020 Karma Revero GT.
Sennheiser, audio specialist and leading manufacturer of headphones, microphones and wireless transmission systems, enters the automotive sector with Southern California-based luxury automaker, Karma Automotive. Sennheiser will be showcasing its AMBEO immersive audio solution for in-car entertainment and communication in a 2020 Karma Revero GT during the Monterey Car Week in California, US. The AMBEO sound system has been engineered using high-grade microphone and loudspeaker technologies and 3D audio expertise, thereby offering an encapsulating sound and clear audio for phone calls, the company noted.
The AMBEO sound system installed in the Revero GT consists of multi-channel loudspeakers arranged in two main layers, in addition to a subwoofer. In addition to this, the vehicle’s headrests have been integrated into the loudspeaker concept to make this experience complete, noted Sennheiser. It said that the system’s AMBEO up-mix algorithm can turn any stereo material into an immersive experience. Additionally, audio sources and levels are managed through a graphical user interface, allowing the driver and passengers to customise the sound according to their preferences.
Sennheiser said the AMBEO system employs beamforming technology to actively focus on the speaker, with the beamforming microphone arrays integrated into both sides of the cabin. This results in the precise capture of voice, while wind, engine and tyre noise are efficiently drained out, it explained. This technology also enables other passengers to join the phone conversation or continue listening to their music or film audio undisturbed.
Engineers at Sennheiser are said to have worked for over two years on developing and fine-tuning the AMBEO technology for the automotive sector. Dr Véronique Larcher, Director, AMBEO Immersive Audio, Sennheiser, observed that the main challenge was to bring immersive high-quality audio into the complex and difficult environment of the car. This system now combines the AMBEO up-mix algorithm for immersive audio with high-quality, elevated sound reproduction and the latest beamforming technology for clear communications, she added.
Daniel Sennheiser, Co-CEO, Sennheiser, said, “We are extremely pleased to be taking the unique immersive audio experience of AMBEO to automobiles, and to be doing so with Karma Automotive, who put their development focus on electric vehicles.” With Karma, the company is combining the future of mobility with the future of audio enjoyment.
The company set out with the aim to create nothing less than the best-in-class sound experience, noted Andreas Sennheiser, Co-CEO, Sennheiser. He said the system will amaze with its authentic immersive sound, voice intelligibility, and possibilities for sound personalisation.
