igus Launches Lubrication-free Plain Bearing Components

igus has introduced components for the interior construction of high-quality camping vehicles these components provide a high service life and are lubrication free. Custom-Bus Camping Vans based at Langenhagen near Hannover manufactures custom-made campers, RVs, motor homes and office vehicles on Volkswagen T6. Custom-Bus Camping Vans has been around for ten years and brings about 80 individually designed new vehicles to customers every year.

“There is a predatory competition in the area of camping vans, where you can only survive as an innovative manufacturer,” explains Craig Kammeyer, company founder and CEO of Custom-Bus Camping Vans. The ‘Custom-Bus Multi’ model contains a kitchen box as a standard in the interior. The handle-free element has sink, stove extractor, freezer compartment and storage space and weighs about 35 kilograms. The ‘Business’ version replaces the kitchen box with an office box that weighs around 15 kilograms and contains everything a mobile office needs, such as a multifunction printer or a folding conference table. The special feature is that each box can be moved via a sliding unit integrated in the furniture and removed with a few hand movements.

In the search for suitable sliding elements, Kammeyer looked for sliding systems on the market and finally found them at the motion plastics specialist igus. Possible alternatives, such as floor rails or re-circulating ball guide systems, are abandoned for several reasons. On the one hand, they have to be lubricated, whereby gradually more and more dirt is deposited, which would impair the smoothness. On the other hand, the alternatives would have been much more expensive and would not fit into the filigree construction of the interior.

Between the rail made of hard anodised aluminium and the carriage there is a bearing surface of abrasion-resistant iglidur plastic, which provides very good results in terms of friction and wear. Solid dry lubricants are incorporated in the material. This means that the bearings are designed for the long-term, maintenance-free dry operation. According to the customer's requirements, the system is not an inspection part due to the use of drylin W and is designed for the required service life of around15 years.
