Harley-Davidson Launches Softail Custom Motorcycle Range

Harley-Davidson India today launched four new Softail models, which intend to combine the performance of the Dyna line with the custom look of the Softail line. The new range comprises of the Street Bob priced at Rs 11.99 lakh, the Fat Bob at Rs 13.99 lakh, the Fat Boy at Rs 17.49 lakh and the Heritage Classic at Rs 18.99 lakh.

Harley-Davidson said that the Softail range has been designed under the largest product development project in company’s history, with all bikes featuring a stiffer and lighter frame built to harness the high torque output of the new dual-counterbalanced Milwaukee-Eight 107 engine. Also on offer is a dual-bending valve front suspension, coupled with and an adjustable hidden rear monoshock.

Powering the new Softail range is the new 1745 cc, Milwaukee-Eight 107 V-Twin. Milwaukee-Eight engines retain the 45-degree V-Twin cylinder angle with a broad-shouldered top end accentuated by a single camshaft design. The new frame has rigid mounting points engineered to package the engine better and reinforce chassis stiffness. The engine features a dual internally counter-balanced system that reduces engine vibration. It comes with a 100mm bore and 111.1mm stroke, with a compression ratio of 10.0:1.

Handling characteristics have been improved with a lighter, more rigid frame retains the classic look of a hardtail while delivering a modern ride. Benefits of the new chassis include increased lean angles for many models, sharper turn-in response, quicker acceleration, nimble flickability, lighter weight and easier side-stand lift off than previous models.

A new high-stiffness carbon steel tubular frame has been employed for the Softail chassis and this, combined with the swingarm, increases the rigidity of the chassis. The frame is 65 % stiffer than the outgoing Softail design, which leads to a 34 % increase in overall chassis stiffness. Its design also achieves reduced complexity with a 50 % reduction in component parts and 22 % reduction in welds.

A new monoshock rear suspension has been introduced in the Softail series, which retains the classic hardtail look, while the revamped geometry improves ride quality, traction and control. Adjustable for spring preload, it enables a 217 kg range of payload capacity for increased passenger comfort and optimum handling.
