New plant to expand the company’s manufacturing capabilities in adhesives, sealants and surface treatment products to cater to emerging markets

Henkel Adhesives Technologies India Pvt Ltd today announced the inauguration of its new production facility in Kurkumbh, near Pune. This plant has been set up with a total investment of about € 50 mn (Rs 400 crore), with the aim to address the growing demand of Indian industries for adhesives, sealants, and surface treatment products. The Henkel Kurkumbh manufacturing site will be formally inaugurated on 5 February 2020.

This new Henkel manufacturing facility is set up in an area of 100,000 sq m, having a built-up area of 51,000 sq m, making it India’s largest adhesive manufacturing facility. It will further increase Henkel´s capabilities to serve customers across markets including flexible packaging, automotive, agriculture and construction equipment, general industry, and metals, the company noted.

The plant is equipped with technologies to ensure traceability and transparency by ensuring built-in quality. End-to-end digitalization of the plant operations has enabled digitised workflows, thus making manufacturing more efficient. It deploys closed material handling systems and a high level of process automation. For the first time, as a global pilot in Henkel, the site has implemented deep integration of process automation with Smart Factory (Industry 4.0).

The Kurkumbh site also meets the highest standards of sustainability. It is among the very few chemical manufacturing sites to be awarded the LEED Gold certificate by the US Green Building Council based on a holistic energy efficiency concept, the company noted. It said about 10 % of the total power consumption of the site comes from captive solar energy, with further use of renewable energy planned. Almost 16 % of the site’s annual water requirement comes from rainwater harvesting, and air, as well as wastewater discharge, are monitored online at the site.

Jan-Dirk Auris, Member, Management Board and Executive Vice-President, Adhesive Technologies business unit, Henkel AG & Co. KGaA, said India is one of the most important emerging markets with tremendous growth opportunities for adhesives business. Henkel has application experts across manufacturing industries worldwide and works closely with customers and partners, he added. Auris further said the launch of this multi-technology manufacturing facility creates capacities to meet the demands for its high impact solutions in this dynamic market.

The company will continue to invest in local manufacturing, as it gives its Adhesive Technologies business in India a strategic advantage, noted Shilip Kumar, President, Henkel India. He said the Kurkumbh manufacturing site is a very important milestone in Henkel’s journey in India. This site will not only cater to the Indian market but also markets in geographic proximity such as the Middle East, Africa, and South Asia, added Kumar.
