Maruti Suzuki India Ltd (MSIL) today announced that it has achieved the feat of 35 lakh cumulative sales of its Alto hatchback. The company said that Alto has carried the ‘best-selling car’ tag in India for 14 consecutive years. Alto has clocked a growth rate of 6 % and garnered a market share of 33 % in 2017-18, MSIL noted.
The Alto brand is a pioneer in democratising features including power steering, front power windows, integrated stereo, internally-adjustable outside rear view mirror (ORVM), trendy headlamps and sporty bumper grill, the company stated. Customers, especially at the entry-level, see Alto as a win-win package of style and affordability, it added. About 44 % of Alto sales contribution comes from young customers less than 35 years of age, noted MSIL.
R S Kalsi, Senior Executive Director - Marketing and Sales, MSIL, said the Alto brand continues to remain fresh, relevant and as exciting as it was in 2000. The Alto is adding 5 lakh new happy customers every two years since 2006, he added. Kalsi noted that Alto clocked 10 lakh units in 2008 and touched 15 lakh units in 2010, and has crossed 35 lakhs of cumulative sales in 2018. “Around 55 % of customers have selected Alto as their first car purchase in 2017-18 and interestingly, 25 % of Alto buyers are buying it as an additional car,” Kalsi added.
