Maruti Suzuki India Ltd (MSIL) today launched a diesel hybrid version of its Ciaz sedan at a starting price of Rs 8.23 lakh. A mild hybrid with features such as idle start-stop, power assist and regenerative energy, the Ciaz smart hybrid – as the company calls it – will be available with the company’s DDiS 200 1.3 l engine. The Ciaz SHVS will replace the existing Ciaz diesel variants.
The SHVS (Smart Hybrid Vehicle by Suzuki) uses an integrated starter generator and an advanced high capacity battery that stores energy generated while decelerating or braking, which is otherwise lost. The system uses it to power an electric motor during acceleration, thereby increasing overall fuel efficiency. The Ciaz hybrid claims to be India’s most fuel-efficient car with a mileage of 28.09 km/l.
Kenichi Ayukawa, MD & CEO, MSIL said the Ciaz smart hybrid is special as it helps the company participate in India’s vision of promoting hybrid and electric vehicles. The vehicle was launched in the presence of Ambuj Sharma, Additional Secretary, Department of Heavy Industries, Government of India.
The launch comes in the wake of the government’s FAME (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric vehicles) India scheme that was announced in April this year to promote eco-friendly vehicles. The scheme envisages support to the tune of Rs 795 crore till 2020 for the manufacturing and sale of electric and hybrid vehicles in the country. The Ciaz SHVS attracts a subsidy of Rs 13,000 under FAME, and the prices announced are also subject to the incentives given by the government through lower excise duty of 12.5 %.
This incidentally is the first hybrid vehicle launched in the mass market segment. CV Raman, Executive Director (Engineering), MSIL said the company will look at introducing hybrid technologies in the volume segment as well in the future.
