Mercedes-Benz India Ltd (MBIL) today launched the locally-manufactured E220d long wheelbase E-Class, featuring the company’s new OM 654 diesel engine, at Rs 57.14 lakh, ex-showroom Pune. The E220d marks the entry of the OM 654 diesel engine, which is said to be more powerful, efficient, lightweight and compact. The company launched the car at its manufacturing facility in Chakan, Pune, from where it rolled out the first E-Class 220d.
The new E220d is powered by a four-cylinder, 2 l, OM 654 diesel engine delivering 194 hp of power at 3,800 rpm, with peak torque of 400 Nm from 1,600 to 2,800 rpm. The engine is mated to a nine-speed, 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission. MBIL said the new OM 654 diesel engine is lighter by 17 % and consumes 13 % lesser fuel than its global predecessor. The engine is said to feature an aluminium engine block, flat steel pistons with stepped combustion bowls and long connecting rods, and NANOSLIDE coating of cylinder walls for friction reduction.
The design of the long wheelbase E220d is similar to that of its other diesel and petrol siblings, with LED headlamps and tail lamps, panoramic sunroof and 17-inch alloy wheels. The interior features ambient lighting with 64 colours and five dimming levels, global-first touch-sensitive controls on the steering wheel and seven airbags.
While MBIL has been carrying out local assembly of Mercedes-Benz models at the Chakan facility over the past few years, the plant was equipped with new tools for assembly of the new engine. These equipment include oil spray nozzle position checking through optical camera, bearing assembly, liquid sealant application system, intercooler assembly and turbocharger sub-assembly fixture.
Roland Folger, Managing Director and CEO, MBIL, said with the launch of the E220d, the company is extending the E-Class portfolio further and making it highly-versatile. He added that the launch also marks the debut of Mercedes-Benz’s globally-acclaimed OM 654 diesel engine.
