MG (Morris Garages) Motor India unveiled today its Hector SUV, which is claimed to be India’s first internet car with over 50 connected features. The MG Hector will also be the country’s first 48V hybrid SUV, equipped with 19 exclusive features that make it the new benchmark in its segment, the company noted. MG Motor India will begin shipments of the Hector in the next few weeks to its network of 120 outlets across 50 cities. The company also aims to expand its network to 250 outlets by the end of September, 2019. Pre-orders of Hector will begin in June, 2019.
The MG Hector comes with internet inside, featuring the next-gen iSMART technology that promises to deliver safe, connected and fun experiences, with the biggest HD touchscreen in its segment at 10.4 inches. The 48V mild hybrid technology is the latest global environmentally-friendly engine technology that enables reduction in petrol engine emissions, said MG Motor India. The SUV is equipped with a 48V lithium-ion battery that stores energy and provides extra torque assistance of up to 20 Nm when required, resulting in a smoother drive, it explained.
The Hector will be available in both petrol and diesel engines. The 1.5 l, turbo-charged petrol engine delivers about 141 hp of power, with a peak torque of 250 Nm, and will be available in both manual and automatic transmissions. The diesel variant will come with a 2 l engine with maximum power of about 168 hp, and 350 Nm of peak torque. The automatic transmission variants of the Hector will be equipped with a six-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT), which is claimed to be highly-sophisticated and refined, striking the perfect balance between power and fuel economy.
Select petrol manual trims of the SUV will come with the 48V mild hybrid technology, with best-in-class fuel efficiency in the segment. The lithium-ion battery in the vehicle is said to be four times more capable than the current offerings in the Indian mass market segment. The hybrid system undertakes three key functions – Engine Auto Start Stop, Regenerative Braking and E-Boost. The combination of these three functions provides a great driving experience while reducing emissions by up to 12 %, noted MG Motor India.
The Hector features MG’s signature design cues including the star-rider front grill, and the octagonal badge. Its character lines are defined by geometric shapes, horizontal flow and symmetry. Various sections of the Hector’s interiors are inspired by modern dance forms, the company said. MG added that the SUV has been designed and developed for Indian customers, built to withstand extreme road conditions. It has been tested for over 1 million km in India before entering production at the company’s plant in Halol, Gujarat, earlier this month.
MG Motor India has invested Rs 2,200 crores so far to rebuild the Halol manufacturing facility and to roll out the Hector. The company has established new assembly line, press shop, body shop, parts distribution centre, testing track and training facility in the plant. The MG Halol plant currently has a production capacity of 80,000 units per annum. The carmaker has also set up a captive vendor park at its plant to pursue aggressive localization for its vehicles.
