Volkswagen Passenger Cars (VW) India launched today its Tiguan SUV, based on the MQB (modular transverse matrix) platform, with prices starting from Rs 27.68 lakh, ex-showroom Mumbai. The VW Tiguan will be available only with a diesel power plant in two trims - Comfortline and Highline, with the latter being priced at Rs 31.04 lakh, ex-showroom Mumbai. The MQB platform which the Tiguan is built on makes the vehicles lighter, more efficient, spacious, safe and comfortable, with a more dynamic drive system and appearance, VW said. VW India had started manufacture of the Tiguan at its Aurangabad facility in March this year.
The all-new Tiguan is powered by a 2 l, TDI diesel engine that puts out about 141 hp of power, with peak torque of 340 Nm from 1,750-2,750 rpm. The engine is mated to a seven-speed automatic-DSG gearbox, and is claimed to offer an ARAI-certified fuel economy of 17.06 km/l. The SUV features VW’s 4MOTION intelligent all-wheel drive system with variable torque transfer to the rear wheels, which claims to ensure superior acceleration capability in various driving conditions.
The latest-generation Tiguan, which has been launched features a host of class-leading premium lifestyle features, noted the company. In terms of safety, the SUV integrates safety technologies and assistance systems as standard. It is equipped with six airbags, along with an ACTIVE HOOD for pedestrian safety, in addition to being built with special deformation elements in the front bumper for added pedestrian protection. VW noted that the Tiguan has been designed to offer maximum possible distance between bonnet and engine, and deformable wings, ensuring other road users and pedestrians are exposed to as little danger as possible. Other equipment include Hill-Start Assist, Auto Hold, self-sealing tyres, cruise control, AppConnect, rain and light sensor, LED headlamps with DRLs, LED tail-lamps, Easy open boot, and LED illuminated panoramic sunroof.
VW said that with the introduction of the Tiguan in India, the company has brought in new design characteristics in the premium lifestyle segment, combining striking proportions with sophistication and on-road presence. These characteristics translate into details such as the horizontally-aligned unit formed by the radiator grill and headlights, and the higher waist line, resulting in a confident on-road stance, it added. The Tiguan offers three-zone auto-climate control system including Air Care Climatronic, along with 615 litres of boot space with all seats up which expands to 1,655 litres with rear-seat folded.
Thierry Lespiaucq, Managing Director, VW Group Sales India Pvt Ltd, said the Tiguan has proven its mettle as a robust and capable carline globally, and the company is happy to introduce it in India. He added that the Tiguan is packed with the right amount of power, design and exceptional driving capabilities, making it suitable for both daily commute and a meticulous off-road adventure. With the Tiguan, VW introduces its 4MOTION intelligent all-wheel drive system based on the modern MQB platform, a first for the company in India, noted Lespiaucq.
