All Volvo cars will now be top speed restricted and will come with a Care Key allowing owners to set further limitations on vehicle capabilities
In a pursuit to further strengthen vehicle safety, Volvo Cars are extending beyond legislations to reduce serious injuries and fatalities in traffic collisions. Volvo vehicles have been restricted to 180kmph top speed limit, and an additional Care Key has been introduced allowing drivers to increase restrictions while lending their cars to others. Volvo claims both these new initiatives display how OEMs can take responsibility in actively working towards minimizing road fatalities and injuries. The company has taken the top speed restriction step even with a lot of controversial elements in the picture. Volvo insists it is an obligation on the part of car manufacturers to take actions that might ultimately save lives.
A number of driver assistance programs have proved beneficial in increasing driver control at higher speeds. But it must be noted that assistance systems become weaker to act beyond certain speeds. Malin Ekholm, Head, Volvo Cars Safety Centre states “Our speed-limiting technology, and the dialogue that it initiated, fits that thinking. The speed cap and Care Key help people reflect and realise that speeding is dangerous, while also providing extra peace of mind and supporting better driver behaviour”. The company mentions that on an average people have poor understandings around the dangers of speeding. This results in poor adaption in relation to traffic situations which might result in collisions. Besides speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol and distraction are the other primary areas of concern when it comes to traffic safety. Many more actions are to be introduced in future Volvo vehicles.
