Over the last few years, the diversity of the Indian automobile market has resulted in the introduction of a few new vehicle segments, which in times of the industry downturn, continued to keep the sales carts ringing. Thanks to the government's decision to charge excise duty on vehicles basis their lengths, product planners, in their whiteboard marking exercises, traced opportunities in the compact sedan and compact SUV segments. Similarly, a new segment has emerged for crossover hatchbacks as well.
In a rapidly evolving segment, we have witnessed the launch of the Volkswagen Cross Polo, the Toyota Etios Cross as well as the more masculine Fiat Avventura. The latest entrant is the Hyundai i20 Active, based on the highly popular i20 Elite premium hatchback from the South Korean carmaker.
