Power, stability and comfort are just a few highlights of what Maruti Suzuki has packed into the all-new third generation WagonR. While the new WagonR gets a bigger power plant alongside the existing 1.0 litre engine, it has also been constructed on the fifth generation of the HEARTECT platform. This has not only created abundant cabin room but has also made the WagonR more stable and comfortable to drive. That’s not all! The new model now comes with exciting features and all at attractive price points. Here’s how it shapes up.

Maruti Suzuki has gradually been phasing out its older platforms, bringing new products on its fifth generation HEARTECT platform. This has also provided the company the flexibility to make world-class products that offer enhanced safety and build quality. With a few powertrains on offer, Maruti Suzuki has brought in their 1.2 litre K-Series, four cylinder petrol engine alongside the 1.0 litre, three cylinder mill that is now 10 % more efficient. The third generation WagonR has been introduced with features that make convenience and functionality more affordable to the masses. Maruti Suzuki aims to recreate the magic of the WagonR adopting a fresh new approach to a product that promises to be a smart choice of the average urban dweller.

Laid on the HEARTECT platform, the WagonR has become bigger and bolder. Looking closer at the dimensions of the hatchback, the WagonR now measures 3,655 mm in length, 1,620 mm in width and 1,675 mm in height. The wheelbase is now longer and measures 2,435 mm, that is nearly 35 mm longer than the outgoing model. With the new platform, the company has been able to create a wider car, the front track has increased by 140 mm while the rear track has increased by 150 mm. The increase in length has also added 17 mm to the length of the boot, creating more luggage room. Boot space now measures 341 litres and with the second row folded down, the car can hold up to 710 litres of cargo.

With a reasonably larger footprint on roads, the new WagonR can surely make an impression. To support it with a better performance, Maruti has brought in a new 1.2 litre K-series engine. This motor not-only offers more power but enhanced refinement; this is also a much needed addition to a bigger body but also offers better NVH and Acoustic performance. Being a four cylinder engine, the motor feels refined and also brings down associated vibration levels. Producing a peak power of 81.3 hp at 6,000 rpm and 113 Nm of torque at 4,200 rpm, the new engine is fun and peppy to drive. The meat of the power lies high up in the band, but it also offers a strong mid-range that allows you to cruise without feeling outpaced. That said, at higher speeds one does tend to hear a lot of wind and engine noise, seeping inside the cabin. Maruti Suzuki is offering the new WagonR with a 5-speed manual transmission as well as the option of an AGS automatic transmission.

With the new fifth generation HEARTECT platform, Maruti Suzuki has also introduced a new suspension setup for the rear. This has enhanced the drivability and stability of the new WagonR immensely. The rear is now supported on a torsion beam suspension with coil springs. The overall suspension is now more adept at absorbing shocks and jolts, leaving occupants pleasantly comfortable inside. With the addition of a torsion beam in the rear, a wider track on the front and rear and the HEARTECT platform that offers more torsional rigidity, the new WagonR is capable enough to drive at higher speeds and feels very sturdy on road. While driving through winding roads, one can appreciate the changes that now offer the driver a great deal of control. This is also facilitated by additions such as ABS with EBD and a disc & drum brake combination which offers strong performance.

Maruti Suzuki has enhanced the looks of the new WagonR. The hatchback now sports more boxy proportions. Continuing its tall boy design, the new WagonR now offers contoured and chiselled looks. The façade has a spilt headlamp cluster which is stylish to look at and sitting smack in the middle is an urban looking grille, with subtle use of chrome. The side profile features designer elements with multiple character lines and squarish wheel arches present a 3D look. Moving to the rear, the tail lamps are designed to give the WagonR a broader look and a fat slab of chrome gives the new hatch a modish feel.

On the inside, the cabin of the new WagonR sports a dual tone colour scheme with black and beige bits. The dash has been constructed to present a more trendy look. The front of the dashboard features a 3D ‘X’ shaped design and houses the infotainment unit on a floating dash mounted construct. The steering wheel has been remade and is now quite chic with a glossy grey finish. Seating on the inside is comfortable with ample space for five occupants. However, the seats do not offer adjustable head restraints for the front or the rear. That said, the bolstering on the seats is adequate for most drivers.

In an effort to make the WagonR appeal to the modern day buyer, many new features have come in to the line-up. Topping the list is a 17.78 cm infotainment unit that features the new layout from Suzuki. A Smartplay Studio has been created for a premium user experience with the audio media unit. This allows you to sync your mobile device through Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Any user in the confines of the car can control the music, radio, navigation and many other features of the infotainment unit through the Smartplay Studio mobile application. Users also get option of receiving alerts from the car.

Maruti Suzuki is calling the third generation model, the ‘Big New WagonR’, along with big dimensions, the hatch comes with a vast feature list to go along with the aforementioned tagline. The list now includes electrically retractable and operated ORVMs, voice recognition, Bluetooth, AUX and USB connectivity, steering mounted controls for audio and Bluetooth telephony, ORVM turn signals, rear wiper and washer, rear windscreen defogger, tilt adjustable steering column, power windows with a driver side auto down function, keyless entry, 12 V power socket, gearshift indicator, rear parking sensors, dual airbags, high-speed alerts and much more.

The all-new WagonR is a highly capable machine meant to cater to a class of urban dwellers that make smart choices. The hatchback doesn’t just have more space and a powerful engine;  as a package it is very comprehensive, covering a majority of the consumer needs of today, without any unwanted additions. To top it all off, the new WagonR comes in at Rs 4.19 lakh (ex-showroom) for the 1.0 litre engine option on the LXI trim and Rs 4.89 lakh (ex-showroom) for the 1.2 litre engine VXI variant. The fully loaded top spec model is being retailed at Rs 5.22 lakh (ex-showroom), and with one look at the overall package, at this price point the WagonR should be a runaway success.
