There has been a great deal of news about various companies in the automotive ecosystem collaborating and making strategic partnerships with each other for the development of future mobility solutions. The foremost mobility solution being worked upon is that of Autonomous Driving and related technologies. The collaborations towards autonomous vehicle solutions begin from the area of semi-conductors, which are the basis for all electronics systems, more importantly for autonomous driving. It moves up to even off-the-shelf autonomous solutions that can be offered to OEMs or anyone willing to work on developing self-driving vehicles.

An example of OEMs partnering is that of BMW and Daimler entering into a long-term strategic cooperation that will focus on joint development of next-generation technologies for various SAE Level 4 automated driving solutions. The initial goal of this collaboration would be to co-develop technologies for driver assistance systems, highly-automated driving on highways, and automated parking. In future, the companies may look at extending the cooperation to higher levels of automation in urban areas and city centres. The market launch in series vehicles out of this co-development is scheduled for 2024, with the partners implementing technologies independently in their respective series vehicles.

Similarly, DENSO Corporation will be establishing a joint venture (JV) company with Toyota Motor Corporation for research and advanced development of next-generation, in-vehicle semiconductors. The DENSO-Toyota JV will aim at accelerating R&D to create future mobility innovations such as connected cars, automated driving, sharing mobility and electrification. The JV company will conduct advanced research on the basic structure and processing method of next-generation semiconductors and develop electronic components by implementing semiconductors. Systems such as periphery monitoring sensors for automated vehicles will be worked upon, with an aim to further the development of autonomous vehicles.

It can be understood that the automotive industry is moving towards leveraging on partnerships between brands that have been known to be largely competitors to enable the development of autonomous vehicle technologies. There is a high level of expertise that each supplier, technology company and OEM brings, from their respective line of work. The process of collaborating and bringing together each of these expert solutions together not only cuts development times drastically, but also enables the best outcome, with first-time-right results.

The high level of simulation that each member of the automotive ecosystem uses in developing their respective technologies and areas of expertise provides further assurance of the performance of these autonomous technologies and components. The possibility of carrying out numerous hours of validation across various environments and conditions in a digital scenario ensures Automated Driving solutions are tweaked to be safe, reliable and ready-to-market. Therefore, it should be noted that further collaborations between the entire ecosystem will bring about robust autonomous driving systems to the market at a rapid pace.
