Claimed to travel up to 500 km in a single charge, the carbon-neutral vehicle Volkswagen ID.4 is based on the new modular electric drive matrix and will be launched later this year

As the Geneva Motor Show now stands cancelled, participants are now gearing up to showcase their respective offerings through various means. Volkswagen is taking a giant leap in its electric mobility strategy with ID.4, and shared detailed perspective on its all new electric compact SUV during a webcast. Based on its new modular electric drive matrix (MEB), the ID.4 electric compact SUV will be initially launched in rear-wheel drive version, which will soon be followed by all-wheel drive version later in Europe in 2020.

Where the ID. Stands for vehicle intelligent design, identity and visionary technologies, digit 4 signifies the new model as a representative of the compact SUV segment. ID.4 is a direct successor of the ID.3, a vehicle with which Volkswagen has opened the third major chapter in its history, following on from the Beetle and Golf.

The carbon-neutral vehicle ID.4 gets a high voltage battery positioned near the centre of the underbody to develop lower centre of gravity and offer a balanced axle load distribution as well as improved driving dynamics. VW’s new electric car has been designed aerodynamically to reduce drag coefficient and enable the vehicle travel range of around 500 km in a single charge, depending on the drive package. The German auto giant plans to reduce the group’s CO2 emissions by one-third by 2025 and become entirely carbon-neutral by 2050, in line with the Paris climate agreement. The electric compact SUV offers a plenty of features such as intelligent, intuitive voice control and touch surfaces.

HYBRID MODE
During the webcast, the company also focussed on hybrid models such as Touareg R4 that will boast of an efficient plug-in hybrid system wherein the alliance between an electric drive motor will generate 100 kW (136 Ps) and a V6 turbocharged petrol engine (TSI) with an output of 250 kW (340 PS) develops a system output of 340 kW (462 Ps). The battery capacity of the Touareg R with a top speed of 140 km/h in all-electric E-MODE has been designed so that most average daily commuting distances can be covered with zero emissions.

Further Volkswagen highlights include the new Golf GTD6, which generates significantly lower nitrogen oxide emissions compared with its predecessor thanks to innovative twin dosing technology, plus the eighth generation of the Golf GTI7, produced more than 2.3 million times. The most recent version is powered by a 180 kW (245 PS) 2.0-litre turbocharged direct injection engine. The maximum torque is 370 Nm. The four-cylinder engine is coupled with a 6-speed manual gearbox as standard. A 7-speed dual clutch gearbox (DSG) is optionally available for the new GTI.

ROUND-UP
Volkswagen has lined up around one billion euros for its portfolio electrification as well as increase hybrid range in the portfolio. The company believes new mild and plug-in hybrid drives in large-scale product lines such as the VW Golf will significantly help in reducing fleet emissions in future mobility. Production of the ID.4 is planned to take place in factories in Germany, China and USA, cementing its status as a global model, unlike the ID.3 which is not planned to be sold in the USA.
