Xtrac Develops Transmission For Integrated Lightweight EVs

Xtrac, designer and manufacturer of high-performance transmissions and driveline components, has launched its P1166 bevel gear set and differential for Integrated Lightweight Electric Vehicle (ILEV) transmission systems. The Xtrac P1166 system is being incorporated by Williams Advanced Engineering into its innovative modular lightweight electric car platform concept known as FW-EVX. Williams is showcasing its FW-EVX chassis concept at the UK’s premier low carbon vehicle event at Millbrook. The company said that its advanced drivelines developed for high performance electric vehicles are highly-relevant to automotive mainstream.

The P1166 transmission, fully integrated with YASA P400 motor-generator, meets the tight packaging and lightweight requirements for the front axle of Williams’ modular lightweight electric car chassis, Xtrac said. It added that the mass of 17-20 kg of the P1166 unit, dependent on configuration, reflects the high-power density achieved. Additionally, despite its tight packaging, the transmission is rated for a maximum speed of over 10,000 rpm and peak torque of 1,000 Nm. In combination with three YASA P400 series motors, the overall rating of the William’s powertrain is 480 kW (640bhp). The P1166 features a bevel gear set and differential, and is optimised for road-going refinement and durability.

James Setter, Head, Automotive and Engineering business unit, Xtrac, said important lessons can be learnt when designing, testing and validating technology for extreme applications. When the internal combustion engine is removed it reveals the slightest transmission noise, vibration and harshness, he added. Setter also said that road vehicles demand a high level of NVH refinement that is not required in motorsport, so Xtrac tailors the design of high-end transmissions for these vehicles accordingly. “By developing a whole family of EV transmissions for two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive applications, we can provide solutions for numerous possibilities,” said Setter.
